A Vampire is a type of {{Demon}} that lives of the {{Blood}} of {{Human}}s. At first glance they look completely like a normal human being (usually young and attractive), but when they show their {{Demon}} face, it is twisted and monstrous with two large fangs used for puncturing the skin and arteries of their victims. Vampires are immortal, but can be killed by piercing their hearts with a WoodenStake. They can also be killed by decapitation or fire, and revile {{Garlic}}, {{Cross}}es, {{Church}}es and HolyWater. They are violently allergic to SunLight? and burst into flames if directly touched by it.

Vampires were at one time {{Human}}, but were {{Sired}} by another Vampire. {{Siring}} involves the ritualistic drinking of blood by and from both Vampire and {{Human}}, and is the method in which they increase their numbers in the world. It is unclear where or who the first Vampire was, but it is suggested in BtvsSeasonSeven that the TurokHan were the first Vampires, and that they were responsible for creating Human-Vampires.

{{Darla}} presses a Cross against {{Angel}}'s chest and it sears his skin. "See? No matter how good a boy you are - God doesn't want you!" - {{Darla}}, DearBoy

Interestingly, the TurokHan are completely immune to HolyWater, Crosses, and assumingly the Bible, all of which burn Human Vampires. In fact, this small detail sheds a lot of light on the subject of {{Vampire}}s and their relation to "God", if He indeed does exist in the BuffyVerse. Perhaps, and this is pure speculation, the first {{Human}}s to become {{Vampire}}s did so willingly, with offers of power and immortality (an Adam and Eve sort of thing). When this {{Human}} allowed himself to be {{Sired}}, he gave way to a new breed of {{Demon}} that would in turn create the greatest problem the BuffyVerse world would ever face. After all, she is BuffySummers Buffy? the Vampire Slayer, and this may be the reason the {{Vampire}} is the only {{Demon}} literally rejected by God in the BuffyVerse.

VAMPIRE FACTS

  • Vampire hearts do not beat and essentially neither do many of their internal organs function. From pure speculation (nothing substantial has been revealed on either of the series), it is assumed they have a working digestive system. It is also known that Vampires bleed, but how they accomplish this without a heartbeat is befuddling.
  • Vampires can actually live off the blood of animals as well. {{Angel}}, {{Spike}} and HarmonyKendall Harmony? are examples of this, as they drink Pig's and Otter's {{Blood}}.
  • Vampires can also eat normal food (whether they enjoy it or not is another question), and are affected by alcohol, caffiene and other stimulants.
  • Vampires can be infected by a certain poison known as KillerOfTheDead, as seen when {{Angel}} was poisoned by {{Faith}} in BtvsSeasonThree (3.21 "GraduationDayPartOne?"). It's not certain whether normal poisons that affect {{Human}}s affect Vampires as well.
  • Vampires do not need to breathe, however as an intstinctual reflex from their {{Human}} lives, they can and often do.
  • Vampires must be invited into the home of the living, otherwise they physically cannot enter.
  • Vampires should not be able to get, or cause, pregnancy. There is one phenomenal occasion when two Vampires have created a child. {{Darla}} and {{Angel}} (both Vampires) are the parents of the only recorded Vampire offspring, {{Connor}}.
  • Vampires do not have a reflection. This oddly enough includes the clothes they are wearing. To justify this, JossWhedon once said in an inteview that it's got to do with an Aura, also explaining why Vampires clothes turn to dust with them when they are killed.
